A wedding in the vineyard below Prague Castle

Villa Richter sits inside the Prague Castle grounds, on a rocky slope above the Old Castle Stairs, surrounded by the St. Wenceslas Vineyard. Below you, the whole of Malá Strana and the Old Town. I have photographed weddings here, and it is one of the few places in Prague where you can have the castle, the vineyard and the city view in a single afternoon.
This page is what I would tell you over coffee if you were thinking about getting married here: what the venue is like, where the best portraits are, and how to plan your day around the light.
The venue
A villa, a vineyard and the whole city below
The villa was built in 1836 as a classicist summer house. The vineyard around it is, according to legend, the oldest in Bohemia, said to have been tended by St. Wenceslas himself. After years of restoration, the villa and vineyard reopened in 2008 and are now part of Prague Castle.
There are three restaurants on the grounds: Panorama Pergola under the vines, Piano Terra on the ground floor and terraces, and the more formal Piano Nobile with its glasshouse on the first floor. That gives you options from a relaxed garden reception to an elegant dinner.

Portraits
Where we take your photos
The vineyard paths and stone steps are made for couple portraits. The rows of vines lead the eye straight to you, and the city sits softly in the background.
Within a short walk you also have the Old Castle Stairs, the castle gates and the quiet lanes of Malá Strana. If you want the classic Prague shots, Charles Bridge and the river are a few minutes away by car.

Light
Plan your day around the evening
The vineyard faces south over the city. In the late afternoon the light turns warm and soft, and after sunset the city lights come on below you. Those twenty minutes of blue hour are my favourite time here, so I always build a short portrait break into the evening timeline.
During the day the grounds are open to visitors, so for quieter portraits I plan the timing with you and the venue in advance.

Practical tips
Good to know before you book
Getting there. The grounds are reached from the Old Castle Stairs or from the castle side near the Black Tower. The paths are steep and cobbled, so comfortable shoes for portraits are a good idea, and older guests will appreciate a car drop-off plan.
Ceremony. Ask the venue team directly about ceremony options, exclusive hire and capacity for your date. They can tell you what is possible in each space.
Weather. Have a plan B for rain. The villa interiors and the glasshouse of Piano Nobile photograph beautifully too.
Timeline. Leave 20–30 minutes for portraits around sunset. It is worth it.
